Scott Leone, father of Isabella Angelica, shares his family?s story of despair, courage and hope as they struggle with her leukemia diagnosis. ?After a fierce and intense battle with the disease, Scott and his family are relieved to be walking in this year?s Light The Night Walk in Toronto; Isabella proudly carrying her white balloon, celebrating their victory and championing the cause.
Our angel Isabella Angelica Leone was born on June 24th 2008. A healthy and beautiful little girl whose eye lashes weighed more then her. In March 2010?we noticed Isabella was not herself, paler than ever and feeling lethargic.?The initial diagnosis was teething, but we brought her back to the doctor the?following month as there was no improvement. The doctor ran some blood tests?and advised us at 3:30 AM? to get to SickKids ?immediately because her?haemoglobin was dangerously low.
On April 30th of 2010 our world was turned?upside down we were informed that Isabella has a form of Leukemia ? we had to?wait till May 3rd 2010 (my wife Alicia?s birthday) to be told she had Acute?Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
Alicia was always the emotional one and I the strong one however; it was I that?collapsed as Alicia stared attentively at the Doctor as he explained?what our future would entail. Isabella?s treatment started with many blood transfusions and surgery to put?a port in her chest. Since then Isabella has suffered from side effects from?the lumbar punctures, chemo and steroids?
We are happy to announce that?Isabella successfully finished her treatment on July 15th, 2012 and will be?carrying a white balloon at the Light The Night walk this year!!
Isabella?s battle against this terrible disease has been an eye opener to?many, bringing people together and ensuring that not a single moment is?taken for granted.
Cancer is something that affects my family deeply. I have lost my father,?grandfather and all my uncles to various forms of cancer, but the more I?become involved in Light The Night the more I realize that this disease and?many other types of cancer can be defeated.
Isabella was in the hospital last year during last year?s Walk.?This year she will be carrying her white balloon high, in the Toronto Walk on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at David Pecaut Square.
We are?honoured Isabella is the Toronto?2012 Light The Night Honoured Hero and we hope that?you will join our family in this walk for a cure in a community near you.
