US: Egypt agrees to stop raiding activists

Egyptian authorities agreed Friday to halt raids against non-governmental pro-democracy groups as senior Obama administration officials stepped up pressure for them to stop, U.S. officials said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson spoke Friday with senior Egyptian officials to underscore Washington's concern about the raids on the organizations, including three groups funded by Washington, according to the Pentagon and the State Department.

Egyptian authorities told Patterson in Cairo that the raids would stop and seized property would be returned to the groups, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Egypt's military: On alert for attack on Christians

She said Patterson had made clear that the U.S. expects "all international NGOs, including those that receive U.S. government support, (to) be able to return to normal operations as soon as possible in support of the democratic transition under way in Egypt."

Patterson agreed to take part in a dialogue with Egyptian officials to better explain the work of the organizations and address any concerns they might have. "These NGOs should be allowed to operate freely as they do in countries around the world in support of democracy and free elections," Nuland said.

After Patterson's discussions, Panetta spoke by phone to the head of Egypt's ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, to emphasize the importance the administration places on the country's democratic transition and the ability of non-governmental organizations to work.

Egyptian forces raid activists' offices

Panetta expressed appreciation for the decision to stop the raids and move to make it easier for NGOs to work in Egypt, Pentagon spokesman George Little said. "The secretary emphasized that it is critical for Egypt to continue on the path to democratic transition," he said.

Panetta "reaffirmed the importance of the US-Egyptian security relationship and made clear that the United States remains committed to the strategic partnership and stands ready to cooperate with Egypt as it continues its democratic transition," Little said.

On Thursday, Egyptian police and judicial officials raided a number of non-governmental organizations assisting in Egypt's transition, including the U.S.-funded National Democratic Institute, International Republican Institute and Freedom House.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Says U.S. Is The Reason Why He Has Cancer

Just one day after Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez hinted that the U.S. may be the reason behind the cancer affecting many of the South American leaders. Read more after the jump!

Wendy L.

(Bloomberg)?Chavez said the Central Intelligence Agency was behind chemical experiments in Guatemala in the 1940s and that it?s possible that in years to come a plot will be uncovered that shows the U.S. spread cancer as a political weapon against its critics.

?It?s very difficult to explain, even with the law of probabilities, what has been happening to some of us in Latin America,? Chavez said in a nationally televised speech to the military. ?Would it be so strange that they?ve invented technology to spread cancer and we won?t know about it for 50 years??

Chavez, who was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in June and had a baseball-sized tumor removed in Cuba, has called for a regional summit of leaders who have battled cancer including Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva and Paraguay?s Fernando Lugo.

?I?m just sharing my thoughts, but it?s very, very, very strange,? Chavez said. ?Evo take care of yourself, Correa, be careful, we just don?t know,? he said, referring to Evo Morales and Rafael Correa, the leaders of Bolivia and Ecuador.
Thomas Mittnacht, press director at the U.S. embassy in Caracas, declined to comment when reached by telephone.

Re-election Bid

Chavez, a former tank commander who has led South America?s largest oil producer since 1999 and will seek a third consecutive six-year term in October elections, says that the U.S. was involved in a coup against him in 2002 that briefly ousted the socialist leader before he was reinstated by the military and supporters.

The 57-year-old leader also accuses the U.S. of plotting an invasion of Venezuela to capture its oil reserves.
Chavez, who continues to send the U.S. more than 800,000 barrels of oil a day, said that former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has warned him about assassination attempts after surviving what he has claimed are hundreds of plots by the U.S. since he took power in 1959.

?Fidel always tells me, ?Chavez be careful, they?ve developed technology, be careful with what you eat, they could stick you with a small needle,?? the Venezuelan leader said today. ?In any case, I?m not accusing anyone, I?m just using my freedoms to reflect and issue comments on very strange events that are hard to explain.?

Pakistan president vows defiance as crises mount (Reuters)

GARHI KHUDA BAKSH, Pakistan (Reuters) ? Pakistan's embattled but defiant President Asif Ali Zardari used the fourth anniversary of the death of his wife Benazir Bhutto to ensure supporters he would not resign in the face of numerous crises building around him.

Zardari, who became president after the former prime minister was killed in 2007 following her return from self-imposed exile, is facing perhaps the greatest threat to the government.

In a jab at the Supreme Court, which is considering an investigation into a memo asking the United States for help against the country's powerful military and which could implicate Zardari, he asked about the as yet unsolved case of his wife's assassination.

"People ask what happened to Benazir Bhutto's case," he said. "I ask (Chief Justice) Iftikhar Chaudhry: what happened to Benazir Bhutto's case?"

No one has yet been charged with her assassination at a huge rally outside Islamabad.

Police estimated Tuesday's crowd at more than 70,000.

Colorful banners sprouted from the throng, which spread out beneath the white, marble mausoleum that contains the bodies of Pakistan's most famous political family.

Speaking from behind bulletproof glass, Zardari appeared relaxed and healthy, likely calm rumors of his ill health.

He flew to Dubai on Dec 6 complaining of chest pains. Party members there told Reuters he had suffered a transient ischemic attack, a stroke-like attack that leaves no permanent brain damage. He returned on Dec 19.

Members of Zardari's Pakistan People's Party say opponents are working with the Supreme Court and the army to bring down the government.

The death anniversary came the same day the Supreme Court began deliberations on whether it could open its own investigation into the so-called "memogate" scandal.

It also came two days after cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan brought at least 100,000 people into the streets of Karachi in a rally that increases pressure the government and cements his standing as a political force.

The memogate hearing, which was adjourned without any decision, is likely to be front-page news on Wednesday, reflecting the intense interest in incremental developments in the crisis.

CALL FOR INVESTIGATION

It involves the publication an unsigned memo seeking Washington's help to rein in the military after U.S. forces found and killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in May.

Pakistan's then ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, has been accused of writing the memo on behalf of the government. He denies involvement but has resigned pending an investigation.

Chief of Army Staff General Asfaq Kayani has called for an investigation into the memo, which has set off a flurry of speculation of a rift between the government and the army which has ruled Pakistan for almost half of its 64-year history.

The political crisis also comes as ties between the United States and Pakistan drop to their lowest point in decades following a NATO cross-border attack on Nov 26 that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. A U.S. report on the incident blamed both sides for poor communications and bad maps.

The incident infuriated Pakistan's army, which is demanding an apology from President Barack Obama, and led to the closure of supply lines for coalition forces fighting in Afghanistan.

The army has denied planning to take power but Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has added to the intrigue and confusion.

Last week he surprised many by implicitly suggesting the military was a "state within a state" before reversing himself on Monday night and saying he was "happy" with Kayani and would not fire him or the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, as some media reports claimed.

Zardari "struck a defiant note, but refrained from attacking the military establishment," at the rally, said security analyst Imtiaz Gul. "This comes a day after Gilani also backed down, and based on that this smacks of some sort of 'backdown' on the part of the government."

Party members on the scene were upbeat.

"The army or the Supreme Court can do nothing to the government and our party," said Ali Gohar, 45, a PPP worker from the town of Sukkur who has come to pay homage to Bhutto.

"The PPP has the blood of martyrs in its foundations and we will support it as long as we live."

Study: San Francisco Bay oil spill damaged herring (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? The cargo ship accident that dumped tens of thousands of gallons of thick, tarry ship fuel into San Francisco Bay caused lasting damage to the region's once-plentiful schools of Pacific herring, the bay's only commercially fished species, according to a study released Monday.

Herring embryos collected from shorelines left coated in oil starting about 3 months after the November 2007 Cosco Busan spill suffered from unusually high death rates and a range of ailments and deformities associated with exposure to the chemicals in crude oil, the study found.

"The majority of embryos in samples from oiled sites were dead on examination in the laboratory," wrote the study's authors, who were led by John Incardona, a toxicologist with the fisheries division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

By 2010, death rates had returned to normal, but the embryos continued to show heart defects that are a common symptom in herring of oil exposure.

The bay's Pacific herring are the largest coastal population in the continental U.S. and a key element of the bay's complex food web, according to the study, which was published online by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The spill that resulted from the massive cargo ship striking one of the pillars of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in heavy fog killed more than 6,800 birds and closed beaches to swimmers for weeks.

In 2009, California regulators cancelled the bay's herring fishing season, which typically begins in January. The state said the herring populations in the bay had reached an all-time low, with the causes ranging from drought to pollution from the oil spill.

The north-central San Francisco Bay shorelines left coated in oil and littered with sticky tarballs are one of the historic spawning grounds for the bay's herring. Only about half the oil along those shores was recovered, and an unknown amount remained submerged near the water's edge, the study said.

The study's authors knew from herring harmed in Alaska's Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 that those same fish in San Francisco Bay would likely be threatened. Unlike the Valdez spill, which sent hundreds of thousands of barrels of crude oil spilling into Prince William Sound, the Cosco Busan leaked bunker fuel, a mix of diesel and fuel oil left over from the crude oil refining process.

Embryos exposed to chemicals in crude oil suffer from a range of maladies, from heart problems and deformities to swelling and cancer. Similar symptoms were seen in embryos collected for the San Francisco Bay study.

The problems did not seem to be caused naturally or by other pollution in the bay, the study's authors wrote. They said the only common feature of three sites where the embryos were collected was that they were exposed to oil.

Jonathan Maul, a toxicologist with The Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University who was not involved in the study, said the researchers faced difficulty in showing that the toxins came from the Cosco Busan's bunker fuel and not other sources in the environment. He said the study should encourage scientists to look further into the toxic effects of oil contamination.

"Overall I believe it is a valuable study and should garner attention toward impacts to early life stages of fisheries," Maul said.

Because the chemical levels found in the embryos didn't seem high enough to cause the high death rate, the study concluded that exposure to sunlight played a part in making the spill more deadly.

"One or more of these unidentified chemicals likely interacted with natural sunlight in the intertidal zone to kill herring embryos," the study said.

Addictive meth is scourge of rural Missouri (Reuters)

KANSAS CITY, Mo (Reuters) ? Becky Cozort knows all about the allure of methamphetamine, a highly addictive drug that appears especially rampant in Missouri.

"You can't do it one time and say no," Cozort said. "You feel you have to keep it going."

Meth has hooked a lot of people in Missouri, which is on its way to leading the nation again this year in the number of meth lab busts. Much of the meth activity occurs in the hilly, mostly rural region south of St. Louis, where Cozort lives.

Meth can be cooked at home, using cheap, easily accessible ingredients. Finding a meth supplier isn't hard, Cozort said.

"You go into a bar and you can find someone who can get you meth," Cozort said. Cozort, 32, said she has been on and off meth since age 16, quit again four months ago and is in treatment.

Missouri is expected to total more than 2,100 seizures of meth labs or dump sites in 2011, according to the state patrol. They include busts in five mobile homes owned by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in tornado-ravaged Joplin. The trailers were occupied by tornado survivors.

Missouri is far ahead of other states in meth busts again this year and has ranked at the top nationally for seven years, according to data reported to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

Last year, there were 11,239 meth busts reported to the DEA, with 1,917 in Missouri alone. Four states near Missouri -- Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana and Tennessee -- also have usually ranked high nationally in meth busts, the DEA data show.

Cozort lives in Jefferson County, which has twice as many meth lab and dump site seizures as any other county in the state and far more than most, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol data. Bordering counties also rank high.

The area may be attractive for meth-making because it has rural hideaways still not far from metropolitan St. Louis, said Lieutenant John Hotz, a patrol spokesman.

But the county is also a place of strong enforcement efforts, led by seven officers assigned to meth cases, said Corporal Timothy Whitney of the Jefferson County Sheriff's office.

"We take an extremely aggressive approach in addressing meth in this area," Whitney said. "The high (meth bust) numbers are actually because we do put the work into it."

Likewise, Hotz said the high meth numbers statewide are partly due to enforcement at the local levels. In addition, Missouri requires all local agencies to report meth busts to the state. That is not the case in all states, which may make their numbers appear lower, he said.

The key ingredient in meth is pseudoephedrine, which is found in some over-the-counter cold medicines. A federal law that took effect in 2005 requires pseudoephedrine to be sold behind the counter, in limited quantities and only to persons with a picture ID.

That law probably contributed to the annual declines in meth lab busts for several years, said DEA spokesperson Barbara Carreno.

But the numbers have rebounded in the past two years due in part to a tactic called "smurfing" in which people buy pseudoephedrine products for $8 or $9 a box and sell them to meth makers for 10 times as much, Whitney said. Sometimes, these are people trying to raise money to buy their own drug of choice, such as heroin, he said.

Jefferson County has tried to control the sale of pseudoephedrine by making it available only by prescription, which has pushed purchasers into other counties, Whitney said.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has called for a state law requiring prescriptions for pseudoephedrine, which has met opposition from drug companies. Only two states, Oregon and Mississippi, have such a law, he said.

Meth is cooked using common supplies, such as rubbing alcohol, battery acid and drain cleaner. Meth can be smoked, inhaled, snorted or injected.

Meth poses not only a health risk to users but to people living around places where it is made. Cooking it can cause explosions and the residues of meth products are health hazards requiring careful cleanup, officials said.

Federal funding to help pay for meth lab cleanups was cut off this year, likely causing the drop-off in meth enforcement in some states, officials said. But Congress approved new funding for 2012.

Cozort said when she first tried meth in high school it cured her attention deficit disorder and helped her read and remember material, get good grades and graduate.

Later, when she changed from snorting meth to injecting it, the drug gave her the type of euphoric feelings craved by many meth users. But that feeling eventually faded.

"Later, it confused me and made me more lost," she said. Cozort said a law requiring pseudoephedrine products to be prescription-only would put the brakes on a lot of users.

"If they are not going to pass that law it's hopeless, I really think it is," Cozort said. "It's too easy to get."

Dozens homeless for holidays after huge Calif. blaze

About 60 people were left homeless Thursday by a San Francisco apartment building blaze that took firefighters nearly three hours to control, authorities said.

The five-alarm fire engulfed three buildings before 150 firefighters ? or about half the department's daytime firefighting force ? were able to bring the fire under control around 3 p.m., Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said.

Arson investigators spent the night trying to determine what sparked the fire.

The blaze sent one firefighter to the hospital with a burn to the neck and a civilian was treated for mild smoke inhalation, according to Hayes-White.

A second firefighter, originally reported as hospitalized, was given oxygen at the scene.

"It was a challenging fire to fight, but given the time of day, it was actually helpful because most people were out of their dwellings," Hayes-White said. "Other than two minor injuries we were very fortunate given the magnitude of the fire."

Hayes-White said the fire started in one of the Western Addition neighborhood's trademark three-story Victorian homes and spread to a nearby apartment building and a single-family home. A total of 32 dwellings were destroyed.

Witness Rebecca Kmiec told the San Francisco Chronicle that she heard what sounded like "a series of explosions" as the blaze started.

"It was like boom, boom, boom, boom, five to seven times," she added.

As the fire burned during the afternoon, a pillar of thick smoke rose over the residential neighborhood dotted with century-old Victorian homes. Authorities closed several blocks of streets, causing massive traffic jams in the area.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene and set up an evacuation center to assist residents displaced by the fire, NBC Bay Area reported.

The fire spread easily due to brisk winds and because the building where the fire started was made of wood and directly attached to other buildings, Hayes-White added.

A nearby elderly care facility was evacuated as a precaution because of the heavy smoke, according to NBC Bay Area.

Those wishing to donate to the fire victims can contact the Red Cross at (888) 4-HELP-BAY or visit www.redcrossbayarea.org.

Final 3 Compete On 'X Factor'; Simon Cowell Thinks He Knows Who Should Win (omg!)

The Final 3 on 'The X Factor' -- FOX

"The X Factor" and its $5 million recording contract is in America's hands to decide.

Josh Krajcik, Chris Rene and the lone lady left standing, Melanie Amaro, took the stage for one last set of competition performances, and based on the judges' comments, one contender may be in the lead. But who is it? Read on to find out...

PLAY IT NOW: Access Hollywood Live: Lance Bass Breaks Down ?The X Factor?s? Final 3

Here's how Round 1 went:

Josh, a burrito maker from Ohio, hit the stage with "Uninvited," joined by Alanis Morissette. A little thrown off by the superstar power on stage, Josh was strong in his singing, but had a moment or two of insecurity standing next to the Grammy winner - and Simon Cowell noticed.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Nicole Scherzinger: This Pussycat Doll?s Got ?The X Factor?!

"Alanis -- amazing, looks cute, by the way. Josh -- I thought you were a little bit intimidated in the beginning," Simon told the singer following his performance. "Then, as the song got into gear, I heard the old Josh back... It was an 8 out of 10."

Chris dueted with Avril Lavigne on her song, "Complicated," which featured one of the Santa Cruz performer's own rap verses, something Josh's mentor, Nicole Scherzinger, complimented.

"It was a little shaky in the takeoff... but your energy and the light around you is so flippin' contagious," she said. "You shined up there."

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Punk Pop Goddess Avril Lavigne

Looking like the cat who got the cream, Simon introduced his contestant, Melanie, who sang "I Believe I Can Fly" alongside R. Kelly. Performing the tune in R. Kelly's key signature made it less of a show piece for the powerhouse vocalist, according to Chris' mentor, L.A. Reid.

"I felt you got a little bit over shadowed," L.A. said.

Simon, however, praised his contender.

"You didn't look like someone in a talent competition... It was a fantastic version of the song," the Brit chimed in.

With no clear frontrunner in Round 1, Round 2 was anyone's game as the contenders performed without superstar help and in Josh's case, without any help at all. Just a lone man on stage, the Ohioan took out his guitar and gave a soulful rendition of "At Last."

"This is what we call the $5 million song," Simon said. "This is the song that's gonna determine your fate... and what I liked about it was it was all about you, what we liked about it in the first place. This is gonna be a very, very close call tonight, I can feel that."

Chris tugged at heart strings when he performed the song he did at his audition - his own composition - "Young Homie."

Giving his all on stage alongside dancers and spruced up musical accompaniment, the young man was in his element and he was moved to tears by the end.

"You are magic!" Paula Abdul screamed. "You are the consummate singer/songwriter, performer... You make everyone fall in love with you."

Melanie, then took to the stage for her final number - Beyonce's "Listen," complete with a choir and vocal runs that showed her true musical prowess.

"That is the Melanie I love," L.A. said. "That wasn't a $5 million performance, that was a $50 million performance."

Simon, however, went one step further, telling Melanie she was the reason he imported his foreign reality competition stateside, and, perhaps, putting her in the lead.

"I brought this show to America because some of the greatest singers in this world are from this country, and you just proved that," he said. "You, based on that performance tonight, you should be the winner of 'The X Factor,' because you're gonna represent this country all over the world."

"The X Factor" crowns a winner on Thursday night at 8 PM ET/PT on FOX.

Hahaha! Nice intro. I like your writing style.

I think I may make a character for the "Sick, Ungentlemanly, Bastard."

Justin Bieber Stages Concert At Las Vegas Elementary School

LAS VEGAS ? Teen pop icon Justin Bieber plans to perform a private Christmas concert Friday morning for an east Las Vegas elementary school known for providing needy students' families with food, clothes, money for utility bills ? and just about everything in between.

The 17-year-old star's concert, featuring songs from his holiday album "Under the Mistletoe," at Whitney Elementary School comes after the singer pledged to donate $100,000 to the school.

After Bieber announced the gift and concert on a Nov. 1 episode of "The Ellen Degeneres Show," the hundreds of students watching the taping from a multi-purpose room at their Las Vegas school erupted into screams and cheers. One girl is seen jumping up and down, and school officials say some of the students burst into tears of joy.

"For the kids, it shows that someone loves them and cares about them to follow up," Principal Sherrie Gahn told the Las Vegas Sun after the taping. "When you live in an existence where everything seems so hopeless, it's an amazing gift they will never forget. It's beyond their wildest dreams."

Whitney Elementary was first featured on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" in September. The episode highlighted how the school provides a food pantry, clothes closet, free haircuts and literacy training for students' families.

Gahn said more than 85 percent of the school's 600-plus students receive free or reduced lunch. The school also has one of the highest homeless student populations in the Clark County School District.

Gahn, who said she used to see students pocketing ketchup packets from the cafeteria in hopes of having dinner at night, told "The Ellen Degeneres Show" she made a pact with families after she arrived about eight years ago. "I'll pay your electrical bill, your utilities, I'll give you food or clothes, whatever you need, as long as you give me your child and then help raise that child as a person of character," she said.

Families at the school told the show Gahn has stayed true to her promise. One girl said Gahn provided her with a bed. A mother said the principal bought her son glasses. Another mother said the school provided her children with Christmas presents when she planned to skip the gift giving.

Gahn said most of the donations come from individuals or businesses, and she said the show has brought an outpouring of support from across the country. The school also posts a "wish list" on its website, asking for granola bars, pop-top cans of soup and other non-perishable foods that homeless students can eat for dinner or over the weekend.

Bieber's gift matches a $100,000 donation from Target that was announced on the September TV special about the school. That money is set aside to start an after-school program and continue providing services to struggling families.

"My biggest motivator for the kids and the thought and the hope that they don't have to live in this existence when they grow up ? that they break the cycle," Gahn said.

9-year-old NYC boy chokes in school cafeteria (AP)

NEW YORK ? Family members and a witness say a New York City fourth grader choked on meatballs during lunch while school cafeteria workers stood by. The boy later died.

The New York Post ( http://nyp.st/td2pmw) reported Saturday that 9-year-old Jonathan Jewth fell to the ground during lunch Dec. 5 at Public School 47 in the Bronx. He was unconscious before help arrived.

A parent at the school, Andrea Perez, told the newspaper she saw the boy choking but cafeteria workers did nothing. She said at one point they yelled at him to put his fingers down his throat. Jonathan's family says he suffered brain damage and died Monday.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott says his death was a tragedy. Education officials haven't responded to requests for comment about the family's and Perez's account.

(AP) ? Colt McCoy is expected to recover from his concussion and play for the Browns again this season. Benjamin Watson isn't as fortunate.

Watson was placed on injured reserve Friday, ending the tight end's season after he sustained his third concussion since July in last week's loss at Pittsburgh. Watson was injured when he banged his head on the ground following a tackle in the first half, couldn't get his balance and had to be helped to the sideline.

Watson who was Cleveland's leading receiver last season and had 37 catches for 410 yards and two touchdowns this year, visited a specialist on head injuries earlier this week.

Browns tight end Evan Moore was disappointed Watson's season ended prematurely, but understood the choice.

"That's a big loss," Moore said. "All of us are really close with Ben. He's doing well. I don't know the ins and outs of how the decision was made, but I know when it comes to the head, it's not something you mess around with. So I think he not only has to think about himself but his family. And Ben's a smart guy, so I'm sure he wanted to go with the right decision."

Shurmur said Watson, a father of three who will turn 31 on Sunday, has not discussed with him the possibility of retiring.

Watson was not available for interviews as players packed following practice for their flight to Arizona. A team spokesman said per league policy, "players are not available until cleared from a medical standpoint."

McCoy, who was flattened last week on an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit by Steelers linebacker James Harrison, has not yet been cleared to play by Cleveland's medical staff, which came under heavy criticism for its handling of the QB's head injury.

McCoy is still experiencing headaches and was sent home Friday for the fourth time this week to rest. He was seen driving away from the team's facility in his pickup truck and will not accompany the team to Arizona.

Shurmur said there has been no discussion about placing McCoy on IR.

"He's still having some symptoms and that's why we sent him home," Shurmur said.

With McCoy sidelined, backup Seneca Wallace will make his first start this season against the Cardinals. Wallace went 1-3 in four starts last season, and Shurmur expects the nine-year veteran who will be making his 19th start in the NFL to play well.

"I'm anticipating that Seneca's going to go out and execute efficiently and I think we saw Colt do that at times this year," he said. "As a quarterback, you're trying to go out and do everything right all the time. Every once in a while you'll make a bad throw or a poor decision and then you get right back on the horse and try to correct it.

"I would anticipate, based on what I saw in practice, Seneca will do a good job."

Shurmur added that rookie fullback Owen Marecic is also out this week. Like McCoy and Watson, Marecic sustained a concussion against the Steelers, his second concussion in a month.

To replace Marecic, the Browns activated fullback Eddie Williams.

The Browns' handling of McCoy's injury ? he was not given the standard sideline concussion test until the next day ? prompted the league to send medical personnel to Cleveland to meet with the Browns. Representatives of the Players Association also attended the meeting to discuss the team's treatment of McCoy and possible changes to the league's policies on head injuries.

Team president Mike Holmgren said the team did not check McCoy for a concussion on the sideline because he was not displaying symptoms and because the medical staff did not see Harrison's vicious hit while attending to other injured players on the sideline.

Shurmur said the team is not planning any major changes to their procedures on concussions this week, but that McCoy's injury "made an impression on us."

On Friday, the league denied Harrison's appeal of his suspension, which the league handed down for his fifth illegal hit on a quarterback in three years. Harrison is the first player suspended under stricter guidelines for player safety.

Moore, who sustained a concussion earlier this year, is pleased there is increased awareness on concussions and more emphasis on player safety. He's also in favor of the league using independent neurologists at games to help assess head injuries.

"That's something that we could've addressed in the CBA before we finished things up," Moore said. "I think we as players tried to push for health issues but I think we sacrificed a couple things in the interest of getting the business side of it done.

"I thought we could have done a better job as a union -- that's how I personally feel -- of making sure we look after players first. It's something we could have done better and the unfortunate thing is we have a 10-year CBA with no opt out, so we've gotta try to find a way to get it done before then."

Notes: K Phil Dawson was pleased to learn general manager Tom Heckert wants him back next season. "It's nice to hear that. It beats the alternative," Dawson said with a smile. "It's good to know they're not looking for a young guy in the draft." The Browns placed their franchise tag on Dawson this season and could do so again. The 36-year-old is having another solid season, his 14th with the franchise. ... Williams, who wears No. 44, has been popping pads at practice for weeks. "He can drop his weight and block a guy so he'll get a chance to do it live on Sunday," Shurmur said.

Remote wilderness polluted by humans

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Nitrogen from human activity has been polluting lakes in the northern hemisphere since the late 19th century. The clear signs of industrialisation can be found even in very remote lakes, thousands of kilometres from the nearest city. This is shown in new research findings published December 16 in the journal Science.

The research is based on studies of sediment from 36 lakes in the USA, Canada, Greenland and Svalbard, Norway. The researchers have analysed how the chemical composition of the sediment has changed over the centuries. Twenty-five of the lakes all show the same sign -- that biologically active nitrogen from human sources can be traced back to the end of the 19th century.

The nitrogen analyses of the lake sediments show that the changes began around 1895. The results also show that the rate of change has accelerated over the past 60 years, which is in agreement with the commercialisation of artificial fertiliser production in the 1950s. Sofia Holmgren, a researcher in Quaternary Geology at Lund University, Sweden, is the only Swede to take part in the comprehensive study.

"I have studied lakes on Svalbard, where the effects of the increased nitrogen deposition are clearly visible in the algal flora," says Sofia Holmgren.

She explains that both the species composition and production of diatoms -- microscopic siliceous algae -- have changed dramatically in the lakes on Svalbard since the start of the 20th century, with the most significant changes over the past decades.

Combustion of fossil fuels and use of fertiliser are the main sources of the increasing amount of nitrogen in the atmosphere. The nitrogen is transported with air currents and reaches the ground in rain or snow. It can travel thousands of kilometres and the nitrogen thus reaches even the most remote lakes and ecosystems.

Nitrogen is an important nutrient for plants, but overuse in more intensive farming can lead to pollution of watercourses, smog and acid rain in urban environments. However, little is known about the effects in more remote areas. An increasing number of studies of Arctic lakes are now showing major changes to the ecosystems.

Caltech sets 186Gbps Internet speed record, makes our 5Mbps look even more inadequate (video)

Did you know that the Large Hadron Collider at CERN has already produced 100 petabytes of data that needed to be sent out to labs across the world for analysis? Pushing that amount of information across the Internet is a gargantuan task, which is why Caltech teamed up with the Universities of Victoria, Michigan and Florida (International) amongst others to try and break the internet speed record. Using commercially available gear (including Dell servers with SSDs), it was able to push 98Gbps and pull 88Gbps down a single 100Gbps fibre-optic connection between the Washington State convention center in Seattle and the University of Victoria computing center in British Columbia. Head on past the break for a video that shows you how it was done and why it probably won't be commercially available in time to super-size your Netflix queue.
